The Year 12 Mathematics with Calculus Extension course covers Level 7 of the Mathematics and Statistics in the New Zealand Curriculum document, and some Level 8 content. As a Year 12 student you will be studying towards NCEA Level 2. The aim of this course is to provide a firm basis for any mathematical work undertaken in Year 13 and tertiary levels and also to encourage the development of mathematical processes.
This course is a followon course from Level 1 Mathematics Extension (11MATX) and is designed to challenge our most able Year 12 mathematicians, covering the core Level 2 Achievement Standards in Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and Probability and Level 3 Calculus Achievement Standards 3.1 Conic Sections and 3.5 Apply the Algebra of Real and Complex Numbers.
Students develop their ability to think logically, apply skills, work with algebra in a variety of contexts, including Graphing, and expand their knowledge of Trigonometry and problem solving involving both real and complex numbers. They will also be introduced to Differentiation and Integration through the Calculus paper. In addition, students will be introduced to the Probability concepts to prepare them for Level 3 Statistics course. Students will be taught all the skills necessary to achieve each standard, as well as how to put these skills into context and extend their thinking to be able to achieve at Excellence levels and obtain a strong foundation to aim for Scholarship level next year.
Students who successfully complete this course will be invited to Level 3 Calculus Extension (13CALX) and/or Level 3 Statistics (13STAT) courses.
This course is very demanding and requires a high competency level in Algebra.
The standards offered in this course may be altered at the discretion of the Head of Department.
Invitation Only. The selection will be made based the September Entrance examination results and internal assessment results in 2019.
However, some alterations to the selection may occur based on the external examination results.
