Career Education and Gateway

Career development enables students to explore new ideas, gain self-awareness and improve their ability to act decisively. School leavers should be self-aware, be able to explore opportunities, be able to make decisions and act upon them and then transition successfully to the next steps.

Here at Westlake Girls High School the Careers department offer a range of opportunities for students to develop these career competencies through;

  • Career counselling interviews
  • Career Central- a platform to help students recognise their skills, interests, career values and discover pathways to many careers through videos, bulls eye quiz and other activities
  • Visits from tertiary providers
  • Visiting the North Shore Schools Careers Expo
  • Tertiary evening for year 13 students and parents
  • Assembly speakers
  • Katti programme for Maori students
  • Pilot programme for Pasifika students
  • STAR courses in the holidays
  • Gateway programme
  • Parent information evenings
  • Help with scholarship and hall applications
  • Subject option advice
  • Advertise part-time jobs as they occur
  • Senior career education classes
  • Careers programme for juniors through Social Studies

Gateway

The Gateway programme is designed to help senior students transition from school into the workplace or further study.  The programme aims to provide workplace learning for students who are considering a possible future job or career they wish to explore.  It aims to offer students between 5- and 10-days’ work experience.

Gateway also enables students to gain employability skills and NCEA level credits through various courses and workshops.

Gateway enables students to:

  • Experience work in the real world;
  • Try out potential career options (i.e. “test-drive” a potential occupation/career);
  • Develop individual skills for employment; and
  • Network and gain contacts/mentors in their industry of interest.
