Year 9 Science

Course Description

Year 9 Science enables students to develop knowledge and a coherent understanding of the living, material, physical and technological components of their world. It supports students to develop investigation, collaboration, communication and research skills. The course also helps to grow students’ interest in and understanding of the knowledge and processes of science which form the basis of many of their future careers.

Topic areas covered include aspects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science.

Level 1 Science Applied


Entry at the discretion of the HoD.

This course is for students who found Year 10 Science challenging.  

This course does not provide entry into a Level 2 Science pathway.

Level 1 Science


At least an Achieved grade in Year 10 Science. In some circumstances entry may be granted at the discretion of the HOD. An alternative course may be recommended for enrichment or extra support.

Level 1 Science Extension

A Merit or Excellence grade in Year 10 Science; or high Achieved grade at the discretion of the HOD.

Level 2 Biology


4 credits from AS90948 or from Biology-based internal assessments.

Level 2 Chemistry


4 credits from AS90947 or AS90930. 

If new to the school AS90944 will be considered for entry.

Level 2 Earth and Space Science


8 credits from Level 1 Science (excluding 11SCAP).

Level 2 Physics


12 credits in Level 1 Science. 

It is also highly recommended that students have achieved Maths AS91027 (Algebra) based on the NCEA examinations.

Level 3 Biology


Achievement of at least one Level 2 Biology External Achievement Standards.

Level 3 Chemistry


Achievement of at least two Level 2 Chemistry External Achievement Standards.

Level 3 Earth and Space Science


8 credits from Level 2 Earth and Space Science or Geography, including at least 4 credits from an External Achievement Standard (based on NCEA Examinations and Internal Assessment results).

Level 3 Physics


12 credits in Level 2 Physics Achievement Standards as well as Maths 2.6 Algebra AS91261.
