Level 1 Geography
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs H. Lilley.
Course Description
Geography is an excellent subject for students looking for variety in their study. Students studying Geography strengthen their abilities to research, communicate in writing, use spatial reasoning skills and inter-personal skills. Year 11 Geography examines people, the natural environment, and interacts between the two.
Some case studies could include:
- Natural hazards such as Cyclone Gabrielle and Haiti earthquake.
- Different populations such as China, New Zealand, Pacific Islands.
- Megacities such as New York, Tokyo and Lagos.
- Our local marine environment: Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf
- Modelling of tsunamis and urban issues.
- Weather and climate patterns.
- Local and global river environments.
Field trips are an important part of the Geography curriculum. There will be at least one day trip during the year to support learning.
The standards and topics offered in this course may be altered at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge.
The programme is intended to provide foundational knowledge and skills that students can carry through into Level 2 and 3 Geography as well as into the workplace.
Course Overview
Term 1
The year will start with a human geography unit about population and urban studies. Studies will study the pattern of different populations around the world, population dynamics, urbanisation, megacities, cities of the future, and urban issues such as transport problems and asylum seekers.
The term will end with a rohe study of the Hauraki Gulf. This includes perspectives on key issues, threats to the gulf, sustainability and social action, and proposals for marine reserves.
Term 2
This term will shift focus toward more natural (physical) geography. The unit will start with learning about reading and understanding the weather, global weather patterns, and El Nino vs La Nina.
Following this, we will study a wide variety of natural hazards. This will include natural processes and impacts of volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, earthquakes and tropical cyclones. So much variety will be studied in this term!
Term 3
River environments are the focus of study this term including processes forming rivers, flood management and water issues. Local and global case studies can be studied here with the potential for a field trip.
We will also celebrate Geography during ‘Geography Awareness Week’. A variety of exciting tasks and competitions will be held to help familiarise everyone more with Geography and enjoy being a Geographer!
Term 4
Students will start preparing for some Level 2 skills once the external has been completed.
